George Bazaco grew up working on the New York farm of his Greek grandmother, Doukénie, and always dreamed of one day living on his own farm. In 1983, George, a young pulmonologist, and his wife Nicki, a nurse and civic leader, purchased Legard Farm in Hillsboro. When George’s grandmother first set foot on the farm, she said, “George, you must grow grapes.” Two years later the first vines were planted. Thirty-five years later, Doukénie Winery produces award-winning wines from the grapes that flourish in the lush fields in the shadow of Short Hill Mountain—where lucky visitors have been treated for a quarter century by Doukénie’s daughter and George’s mother, Hope, and her homemade baklava.

Pioneers in Hillsboro’s wine producing community, the Bazaco’s are also leaders in farmland preservation, putting hundreds of acres into permanent conservation easements and earning the Town of Hillsboro’s 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award, to place alongside numerous national wine competition awards and accolades.

8. Hillsborough Vineyards

www.hillsboroughwine.com

(540) 668-6216

Just over the Short Hill Mountain from Doukénie, on Hillsboro’s west side, is another pioneering family at the vanguard of craft beverage production. Acquiring the 36-acre hillside property in 2001, Bora and Zeynep Baki also had dreams of creating a vineyard and winery, and with their son Kerem studying Enology at Virginia Tech, they began planting their vines by hand in 2003. Restoring the early 19th-century fieldstone estate and its outbuildings was a labor of love, as was building a tasting room and garden patio that offers relaxation and stunning vistas of the surrounding valley and towering Blue Ridge range beyond.

A family of extraordinary business and creative talents—Zeynep’s lush artwork and aesthetics grace the tasting rooms and gardens and Kerem’s wife Asli manages the operations—the Baki’s broke new ground when son Tolga brought his beer-making expertise to Hillsborough three years ago, providing visitors with a wide range of craft beers to complement Hillsborough’s exquisite and award-winning wines.

For their philanthropy and community leadership, the Baki family was also awarded the Town of Hillsboro’s Community Service award in 2019 and continue to be vocal advocates for land preservation.

www.kalerovineyard.com

(540) 717-8119

Kalero Vineyard is a beautiful 130-acre farm nestled on Short Hill Mountain in Western Loudoun County. The property was bought in 2015 with the ambitious intention of starting a vineyard, making wine and opening a tasting room for the public to enjoy.

The farm was home to an old barn that still had great bones, but had been neglected for ages. The former owners, the Potts Family, shared that a cornerstone on the barn has the year 1834 carved into it with the initials of their ancestors – AC (Andrew Copeland) and JP (John Price). This barn managed to survive the infamous burning raids of Loudoun County during the Civil War.

In 2016, the new owners embarked upon an extensive renovation project to save the barn and turn it into a tasting room that could also hold events. The mission was to preserve the barns integrity and keep as much of the original structure as possible. The magnificent stonework and large timber beams remain, as well as the antique hay fork. The new barn doors are hung with the original hardware.

In 2018 Walsh Family Wine acquired Hillsboro’s North Gate vineyard and tasting room on the Short Hill’s southeast-facing slope. Founded by Mark and Vicki Fedor, North Gate had for more than a decade produced some of the Commonwealth’s most feted vintages. All of Walsh Family wines are featured at their inviting Hillsboro tasting room nestled among the vines, which is, in keeping with the Walsh family’s commitment to earth-friendly farming, a cutting-edge solar-powered facility.
