COMMERCE AND CRAFTMANSHIP

History repeats itself in Hillsboro.

Hillsboro has been known since the early 19th century as a bustling business hub with local artisans craftsmen thriving in a unique and tight-knit community — from wheelwrights and blacksmiths to  sawmills and saloons. Today the town is again a bustling center of commerce in northwest Loudoun County that embraces right-sized businesses featuring artisans, craftspeople and individual owners operating specialty shops and providing services along Hillsboro’s main street.

History and heritage can be found at every step along the Town’s newly installed sidewalks.

At Hillsboro’s eastern gateway stands the Old Stone School, with the Radish Café just inside the nearly 150-year-old building which functioned as the former Locust Grove Academy for local school children. Across Charles Town Pike sits Stoneybrook Farm Market, a local, sustainable and organic farm market and deli sitting on 45 acres of working rural farmland in the Town. Further down the road is Market in The Gap, also home to the gourmet Virginia Picnic Basket Company, which offers picnic basket fare like Mediterranean appetizers, brick oven pizzas and other convenience snack items for an easy stop-off spot between winery and brewery visits.

The Town is also home to award-winning artist Laney Oxman, whose work is featured in the White House Collection of American Crafts, and her husband, Michael Oxman, architect. Both Laney’s studio and Michael’s studios are located on their property in the heart of Hillsboro. His business is run out of a 200-year-old barn where he designs single-family residences and her studio is soon to be a glassed-in space for teaching after their home renovation is complete.
